Google is enhancing Gmail with advanced AI capabilities to streamline email management. On the web, a new Gemini side panel is being introduced, designed to summarize email threads and facilitate drafting of new emails. According to Google’s blog post, users can receive proactive prompts and ask freeform questions, leveraging advanced models like Gemini 1.5 Pro. These features will extend to Gmail mobile apps, enabling thread summarization.
However, access to these enhancements is limited to paid Gemini users, specifically Google Workspace customers with Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons, Gemini Education or Education Premium add-ons, or Google One AI Premium subscribers. It’s advisable not to solely rely on AI tools for critical work, as occasional inaccuracies may occur.
Beyond Gmail, Google is integrating Gemini features into side panels across Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, as announced at last month’s I/O conference. Future updates for Gmail include anticipated AI features such as “Contextual Smart Reply.”
