Earlier this year, Google introduced an AI-powered video creation tool within its Workspace suite. Named Google Vid, this tool helps users quickly create internal video content, much like an enhanced PowerPoint presentation. Google had promised to begin testing in June, and observant Workspace Labs users have noted that the app is now live and fully operational.
AI Integration and Features
Google Vid integrates with Gemini AI to handle extensive tasks such as creating slides, scripting, sourcing relevant stock footage, and storyboarding the entire video. Users can then refine the video by adding or removing slides, text fields, images, and recordings before exporting it as an MP4 file.
Unlike the Help me Write feature in Google Docs, Google Vid’s Gemini prompt is prominently positioned. Starting a new project opens a text field where users describe the video’s themes or goals in a few sentences. The AI can also pull documents from Google Drive or start with pre-existing templates.
Early User Experience

While the AI’s attempts are basic for now, the app is expected to improve before its wider rollout to paying Google Workspace users. The AI-powered voiceover feature, showcased in April, was not spotted in the current version. However, users can sign up for Workspace Labs to try the new video editing tool for free.
Comparison with Other Tools
Google Vid offers a user experience similar to iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, suitable for short, one-time-use videos for educational or work purposes. Thanks to Gemini AI, creating these videos is quick and efficient.
